Management to Verbally Inform Members of Pending Layoff Notices

Today, March 8, 2007, the union learned that members of management are having informational meetings with the ten least senior members of our local and informing them that layoff notices are going out any day with their names on them.  The union is entitled to written notice of each layoff and has not received any such notices to date.

If you are one of the individuals who gets a layoff notice, keep in mind that the union will take every step to make sure the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement are followed chapter and verse.  This means an accurate determination of seniority, identification of eligible vacant positions in the County, and recall rights to name a few.

The union was also made aware that several employees of the Office of the Public Defender’s Policy unit, who are not members of any union, had their jobs summarily eliminated as of 3/2/07.  This should remind us all of the benefits of union membership and collective bargaining.

As of this past weekend it does not appear that letters have gone out. Is there any more updated information that can be passed along. There was some talk that Friday was the last day of the budget error process, is that correct?

We have the right to know what’s going on with out jobs. What do we pay dues for? It’s absolutely ridiculous that some 25 days have passed and there has been no clear notification from the union or anyone else. That’s pathetic. “Just wondering” should just be told what’s going on.

If anyone from the exec board or anyone with any new information. I (as well as many others)understand that information may be coming through in bits in pieces. But on March 8th it was posted on this site that meetings were being held to talk to the bottom 11 attorneys regarding letters that were going out. First, not all of the bottom 11 actually had anyone speak to them. Second, since then no one has heard anything. On Monday I posted a simple question – which has not been answered. Now I have to worry that by posting this I will incur the wrath of the exec board for not having faith or whatever. What I know is that there are several of us that are going to bed each night wondering if tomorrow is the day we’ll learn we don’t have jobs. I know that there are several of us that dread checking our mail each day for fear that “the letter” will be there. We were told back in December when all of this started that this site was going to be “our best tool” for getting information – yet no one has even bothered to attempt to answer a question posted 2 days ago and the last update was on March 8th.
Can someone please address any of this?

That first sentence should have read – Is anyone from the exec board or anyone with any information checking this site. Sorry

I really understand the anxiety you are feeling regarding your job and whether you will continue to have it. It seems to me that if neither management nor the union can or will provide you with any information regarding your continued employment or not, perhaps you might call Todd Stroger’s office and ask him if you are being layed off. The more people who call Stroger’s office, the more likely the information will flow down to our office.
