Appellate Court Reverses TRO

The First District Appellate Court reversed last week’s TRO entered by Judge Riley.  The County has indicated it will have a hearing on the Removal Resolution on the 20th of May.  The story, as reported in the Sun Times by Steve Patterson can be read by clicking here.   On a related note, the County Board defeated a proposal by Claypool, Quigley and Suffredin to have a hearing which accords due process.  Take a look yourself at item 8.

Since Stroger does not need approval of the Board to fire Mr. Burnette and is only having the sham meeting to provide some sort of political cover, I would suggest humbly, that our local concern itself with dues paying members and developing our own political clout.
Ed came to 26th Street and did his little dance for Stroger telling the rank and file we would be furloughed without pay.

He filed his lawsuit against Stroger on behalf of his Directors and Chiefs.

It is quite obvious Burnette is being wronged here, but this is simple politics being played out.

Burnette sued his boss…..what did he think the response would be?

  • Joe Gump, PEOPLE Chair

Thank-you, Justice, for raising the issue of building political clout in such a timely fashion. Our political action committee (PEOPLE) is in the midst of a membership drive to enhance our political standing by increasing membership in the MVP program. As you may know, we are not allowed to spend membership dues on political activies. Thus, we must support the PEOPLE committee to have any impact. For the low cost of $4.20 per pay period, we earn the ability to influence the outcome of elections and the conduct and votes of incumbents. In addition, you receive valuable premiums and a good warm feeling that you are doing all you can to enhance our political power. It is not a perfect system, but you know we will keep close track of the votes of candidates we support and if they fail us — if they are disloyal to our concerns — we will devote our considerable resources to vote the bumbs out. Please contact me, Joe Gump, at (847) 818-2485 to become a member. I will send you more information about the PEOPLE/MVP program as well as a card to sign up.

  • Marienne Branch

Joe, thank you. Justice Cardozo, please shut up!

  • stu smith

Ms. Branch should shut up. Ed’s law suit is designed to increase his staff at the top. It does nothing to decrease caseloads and he has been impotent in getting us the resources we need. We are woefully short of attorneys. Many of the “leaders” are incompetent boobs. Promotions should have happened months ago. The buck for the mess stops with Ed. Perhaps someone new will shake up the top levels of this office, get us some additional attorneys, get promotions completed for people already interviewed. I agree with Cardozo; Ed is protecting his chiefs and directors at the expense of those of us who do the day to day work and at the expense of our clients.

  • Justice Cardozo

    Hey Branch…Get a clue.
Here is how it works…..Burnette’s is as good as out the door…Burnette is not a member of this Union…..
The Democratic Party is holding a fund raiser for Todd Stroger next week and a smart operation would put two and two together….Todd will be around at least 2 years longer than Burnette, so the Union should BUY A TABLE at the Fundraiser!!!!
Deal with it, Branch…..pack a lunch and head to the County Board meeting to sing Kumbaya for Ed and his bosses…..

  • Justice Cardozo

    ONE MORE YEAR…ONE MORE YEAR!!!!!
    Rally around the lame duck!!!!!!
Let’s all wish upon a star for a PD’s Office free from Political Influence right here in Cook County…..
They sell that magic dust at Mary Simpson’s!!!!!
Let’s rally to support the “Directors” and “Chiefs” Downtown who only know what a Courtroom looks like because they watch “Law and Order”.
The Union ought to figure out which end is up here….Stroger is calling the tunes here….Burnette’s out date is May of next year….if he lasts that long….and how about someone actually find the truth here…..was Burnette offered a buyout?
Were there negotiations going on between Stroger and Burnette before all of this became public? What about Burnette’s pension?
Burnette is willing to fall on his sword for his bosses and lackeys and never once has had the balls to address the rank and file at 26th Street explaining why he thought Stroger’s plan to furlough us without pay was a good one.
Hey Branch, don’t bother to save me a seat at the County Board Meeting.
    Don’t Back No Losers!!!!!!
    LMAO….Kumbaya!!!!!

  • Justice Cardozo

The local should buy a table at Todd Stroger’s Fundraiser!!!!!
Pick the right horse in this race.

  • Justice Cardozo

Branch, take a few unpaid furlough days to show your support of Ed!!!!!
    LMAO!!!!!

  • Justice Cardozo

Todd Stroger is going to “put Ed on the bus”.

  • Kulmeet Galhotra

The lawsuit is designed to allow Ed to fill positions that the Board budgets for the office without interference from the County Board President. As a case in point, we believe that the office should have hired 7 new attorneys in 2007 instead of laying off 13 attorneys. In addition, the lawsuit asks the court to allow the office to promptly fill vacancies. That is what is important to this local (in addition to backpay for laid off attorneys)and that is why we want to intervene in the lawsuit.

Let me ask our members, including Justice Cardozo and Ms. Branch, to be respectful to others’ views and not engage in name calling and swearing. Disrespect by any member will not be tolerated. If the comments are abusive, they will be deleted.

Many thanks to whomever removed that garbage that infested this blog for a day or so. I really don’t come here to read profanity, personal attacks and flaming posts.

People need to understand that this blog is NOT there own personal playground to do with as they please. We don’t have a “right” to have it here, it’s a privilege to have it. Further, those who monitor & run it aren’t getting paid to do so. If they have to constantly & continuously delete inappropriate posts and or language, it would be ALOT easier on them to just throw in the chips and remove the blog.

    I don’t want to see that happen……..

  • Bruce Mosbacher Executive at Large

Our Union, per federal law, may not use regular funds for political purposes. Thus we cannot buy a table at Todd’s upcomming fundraiser, even if we thought it a good idea. However, our voluntarily funded political action committee named PEOPLE may engage in political work, including the financial support of political campaigns. That is why it is important to sign up for PEOPLE at a minimum of $4.20 a paycheck. Might I suggest that our learned Justices Ben “White Sox” Cordozo and Bill “Hatch Act” Brennan,(with technical assistance from our PEOPLE chair brother Gump), sign up all their brothers and sisters in HTF as an example to all our members.

And speaking of Todd’s fundraiser, I note that one of the dinner committeeman is a former APD and now Chicago Alderman with the initials H.B. Might he be the next PD? Is it a conflict of interest to be a mortician and the PD? hmmmm

  • Justice Cardozo

We know that 2 other dinner sponsors, Mike Madigan and Tom Hynes, probably are not interested.
Lauren didn’t land at Jenner and Block, did she?
    She should buy a table…

  • Justice Cardozo

The local should sponsor the Woody Jordan Retirement Gala.

  • Dan Walsh

Justice Cardozo, sometimes political fundraisers are also known as going away parties. Todd has no chance of winning in 2010. Anyone with common sense knows that.

  • Bruce Mosbacher Executive at Large

    Dan:

Since when do Supreme Court Justices have any common sense. They are “Law Justices” after all. One of the “Justices” is so out of it it that he thinks the Hatch Act bars Todd from hiring his friends, relatives and Ward operatives into high level County positions. The other “Justice” thought O.J. would be convicted. Forget the Justices and hire a real lawyer. ROFL

    Bruce

  • Justice Cardozo

Right now I am applying for a media credential to cover the R Kelly trial for this blog. Grz will try, too. Can’t imagine Vince hitting the ceiling when we walk in!!!!
How is O.J.’s latest case in Vegas looking?
I realize Todd Stroger should be absolutely crushed in his re-election bid, but he is around for 2 1/2 years. Cook County politics can get interesting, though.
The media never told us the medical condition of John Stroger during his primary battle with Claypool. The Democratic Party can enter 2 or 3 ‘reform’ candidates on the ballot in Todd’s next race to siphon votes from a genuine challenger.

Bruce, maybe Brian Anderson can finally justify his 1st round selection this season!!!!
    Go Go White Sox!!!!

  • Contrarian

I think our local should concern itself with the due process rights of its own dues paying members when management seeks to fire or discipline us. We are entitled only to minimal due process in considering whether management has “just cause” to go after us. Why should Ed Burnette be entitled to more?

  • Kulmeet Galhotra

You have got to be kidding Contrarian. Ed would probably cut off his right arm to have the rights we have under our collective bargaining agreement: a grievance process with four levels that requires an arbitrator to decide the issue. I have been present at several such arbitrations and although we may not have prevailed in each one, nobody left the room feeling they did not receive the process they were due. Ed wishes he had the rights we do.

  • Justice Cardozo

Ed certainly had the right to ingratiate himself with Todd Stroger and members of the County Board.
Todd Stroger’s Fund Raiser is TONIGHT!!!!
Have to wonder how many Directors and Chiefs bought tickets….they would be fools not to.
