Good News – No Layoffs!

At a meeting this morning, the Local learned that there will be no layoffs in the Office of the Cook County Public Defender.   While there will be cuts to the budget that will affect you in the upcoming year, we are glad that none of the cuts will translate into layoffs.  Stay tuned for more news shortly regarding where the cuts will be made.

Thanks again to the strong support shown by our attorneys at the Special meeting of the County Board this last Friday.

In Solidarity,

K. S. Galhotra

Local 3315 President

sorry such a late response – I’ve been out sick. Just want to say that we really dodged
a bullet, here. A tremendous thanks to our fearless leader, Bob, for stepping up to the plate once again with his tireless efforts and energies on our behalves. He was able to rally “the newbies” who presented real faces with real families and real mortgages and real concerns to the various councilmen rather than just faceless numbers. The result for us is great. I appreciate that our office as a
whole and our union members may have to make some sacrifices. But I also appreciate the support of those members who spoke to me and told me they were more relieved to avoid layoffs. Thanks again, Bob and all of the new/newer/and experienced public defenders who went to the Board meeting to speak on our behalves.

I’d also like to say this is wonderful news. Thanks to Bob, all the “newbies,” and the Union, whose hard work talking to board members and management saved jobs. Yes, my position was not at stake this year, but, I am so thankful not to lose any of the newer attorneys whose jobs were on the line. Although our office will face sacrifices with this new budget, losing personnell would weaken our office and our mission so much more than losing funding in other areas. Thanks again!
