Save the Date: June 17th for Annual Golf Outing

The Local’s  Annual Golf Outing is being planned for June 17, 2010 at Water’s Edge Golf Course located at 11605 S. Harlem Avenue, Worth, Illinois.  We are limiting play to 72 golfers (18) foursomes.

There will be a shotgun start so all will finish at roughly  the same time.  All golfers should be at the course ready to go at noon.  Details of the package are being negotiated with course management but it will most likely be similar to what we have had in the past (cart, lunch, dinner, some drinks, greens fees).  Per the decision of the Local’s Executive Board, all players must submit a check made out to AFSCME LOCAL 3315 in the amount of $50 per person as a deposit. The deposit will be refunded for dues paying members who golf upon request on day of event.  Refunds of deposits will not be made for golfers who are guests or retirees.

NO ONE SHOULD TAKE IT UPON THEMSELVES TO CANCEL THE OUTING BECAUSE OF BAD WEATHER.  Last year proved that it is unlikely that rain will result in no golf for the whole day.  If you sign up, show up.

Foursome’s can register only by inter-office mail to DAVE FIGURA MDD@26thST.    Send the names of people in your foursome and at least one contact number so we can communicate information to each group.  Singles, twosomes and threesomses should follow the same procedure.  Be sure to send the checks – cash will not be accepted.  The union will ban any member from the next (3)  Local events (holiday party, navy pier party) if the check bounces. We will pair up groups as necessary.  This is first come first served so don’t delay.

Those coming “just for dinner” should write that in the memo portion of your check for $50.

Why can’t you also negotiate to cover the equivalent amount of the golf cart and green
fees to cover spa treatments for any dues paying members who are not interested in
golfing at these same facilities? You are accepting my dues but you channel it to pay
for golf. Well-I’m not interested in playing golf but I am always interested in
having that same amount applied toward a spa treatment. You should at least make it an
option to the same DUES PAYING MEMBERS. In the eleven years I have been paying dues,
the union has never catered such an option to its non-golfing members. WHY NOT?! Why
not just negotiate for similar services offered by the same resort so that non-golfers
aren’t ostracized at these yearly functions. We had this issue last year and here we
are again with the same issue.

In the past, we have had access to Spa facilites at Eaglewood when we golfed there, but due to I-290 construction, Water’s Edge was selected for this year’s outing. Unfortunately, Water’s Edge does not have a spa. But the location makes it more accessible to the 5th and 6th districts; we often had complaints from that contingent when we were in Villa Olivia in Bartlett for many years, which, by the way, had other activities for non-golfers: volleball, bocceball. tennis and swimming. So we have provided options to non-golfers for years.

Not all members come to all three events. The ones that don’t attend the golf outing usually attend the summer party and holdiay party; some golfers don’t attend the summer party or holiday party. In short, the different events sometimes cater to different members but at least one event caters to every member although they maybe differnt for each. To be sure, the union can’t afford to pay for every member to attend every event (or pay monetary equivelants for the activity of your choice).

Please remember that these events are each organized, suggested, negotiated by your sisters and brothers who take time away from their caseloads and family to do these oftentimes thankless tasks.

We do the best we can to offer a variety of activities that create fellowship for our union members. The golf outing is a longstanding tradition and the members who attend enjoy an opportunity to be outside and compete against each other. This is not designed, nor was it ever intended, as an indulgence for each member. While spa treatments are great, they are necessarily individual in nature. They do not foster a feeling of togetherness or unity. If you have no interest in golf, I would encourage you to attend the two other major events sponsored each year by the union. Our goal is to allow all the members to find the event that best suits their interests while affording them the opportunity to spend time with members of the union from other worksites. If you have other suggestions for communal activities, please feel free to contact us or post on this board.
